Resumes must now emphasize keywords and industry-specific terms and acronyms.

So no matter how you write your resume or for what job niche, chances are it will be e-scanned and e-distributed! Resumes are not a time to be funny.

Believe me, your resume is probably already funny enough without any additional effort on your part.

Resumes are read quickly, and bulleted sentences are much easier for a recruiter to read than long paragraphs. The bulleted sentences in your resume should also begin with action words, such as "developed," "initiated," or "managed."  Action words add strength to your resume.

Employers often receive more than 100 resumes each day; they skim each of these in 7 to 15 seconds. In order to catch a prospective employer's attention and fuel his or her interest in you as a potential employee, refer to the following tips.

Network at the gym, a volunteer organization, a professional association, chamber of commerce, Employment Development Department, Rotary Club, church groups -- anything you can think of to be around people. Eventually the conversation can lead to job leads, learning information about what different companies do, contacts for informational interviewing, etc. Ask the people you know if they can refer you to a job opening. You can even call your previous employers and see if they can help.

Ask them to pass it on to anyone who might be interested in hiring you.

Hundreds of job-related sites on the Internet offer advice on preparing a resume. Ask if you can stay in touch. If the mood seems right, ask if you can buy them a cup of coffee.
